Semaglutide: FDA approves weight loss jab to treat severe liver disease. The BMJ. Aug 21, 2025. https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.r1788
Akheel Syed, a consultant in diabetes and endocrinology and honorary clinical chair at the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, told The BMJ that the FDA approval was an “exciting development.”
He added that the accelerated approval was unsurprising. “With only one other drug, resmetirom, specifically approved for the treatment of MASH, the new approval of semaglutide, a drug from a well known and widely used class of medications for type 2 diabetes and obesity, is most welcome.”
However, he added that a lack of specific diagnostic criteria from the FDA meant that further guidance for clinicians would be “essential.”
Type 2 diabetes: SGLT-2 inhibitors to be offered as first line treatment in major guidance “shake-up.” The BMJ. Aug 20, 2025. https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.r1777
Akheel Syed, a consultant in diabetes and endocrinology and Manchester Academic Health Science Centre honorary clinical chair, told The BMJ, “For far too long, guidelines for the management of type 2 diabetes in adults have taken a glucocentric approach,” with less attention paid to “holistic prevention and treatment of cardiorenal and metabolic disease associated with diabetes.”

NICE recommends weight loss drug semaglutide for obese adults. BMJ. Feb 8, 2022. https://www.bmj.com/content/376/bmj.o340
Commenting on the guidance, Akheel Syed, a consultant endocrinologist at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, welcomed the recommendation, noting that although a similar once-daily weight loss treatment (liraglutide) was already available, semaglutide had the “advantage of once weekly administration, which is much better for patients, and has superior efficacy.” He added that the recommendation of lower BMI thresholds for people from some ethnic minorities, “in recognition of their higher risk of morbidity from obesity, is particularly welcome.”
However, Syed emphasised that “equitable access to novel and expensive medical treatments remains an issue up and down the country,” and he called for better funding to “ensure the best care for patients with obesity.”

Doctors have long known that womb cancer is caused by obesity, however, until now, the effect of losing weight on precancerous changes in the womb have been poorly studied. The research led by University of Manchester and Salford Royal scientists is published today in International journal of Cancer and funded by the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre.
